In Memory of Diane O’Regan (December 22, 2023)

An SUV heading south went into the opposite lane and struck a semi-tractor heading north Friday evening.

According to the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office, 59-year-old Diane O’Regan was driving on Eagle Avenue when the accident occurred. O’Regan needed to be freed from the vehicle and was taken to Hawarden Regional Healthcare for treatment where she died from sustained injuries. Semi-tractor and SUV collision turns fatal near Ireton, IA

Because the bottom of a truck is higher than the bumper of passenger vehicles, when there is a collision the smaller vehicle easily slides under the truck and the first point of impact is the windshield. Seatbelts, airbags, and car crumple zones do not function as intended in underride crashes —frontside, and rear — leaving passenger vehicle occupants vulnerable to life-threatening injuries.
