In Memory of Cody Rishel (June 13, 2022)

New information came to light over the weekend concerning last week’s fatal crash on Interstate 80 in Jefferson County that claimed the life of 36-year-old Hughesville resident Cody Rishel, 36, according to state police.

He was a front-seat passenger in a 2014 Ford Edge driven by Eric Stroup, 47, also of Hughesville, that plowed into the back of a tractor-trailer truck, driven by Lukasz Romanczyk, of Effort, Monroe County, who was not injured, police said. . .

Rishel, who was pronounced dead at scene, was trapped in the car and had to be extricated from the vehicle with the use of special rescue tools, police said. New details released on recent deadly I-80 crash

In Memory of Jeffery Amofa (June 10, 2022)

Around 7:07 p.m., police said 26-year-old Jeffery Amofa was driving a 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe west on C.H. James Parkway. Officers said he crossed the center turning lane, coming head-to-head with a FedEx tractor-trailer.

In Memory of Fernando Robles (June 10, 2022)

The Laredo Police Department have released the name of the victim involved in the Friday accident on Market and McClellan as Fernando Robles, 17.

Preliminary reports indicate two vehicles were involved in the accident, a black Cadillac SRX, driven by Robles and a tractor-trailer. Robles was declared dead at the scene. . .

A two-vehicle crash at approximately 5:55 p.m. Friday, June 10, has claimed the life of an Enterprise man. Jadakis T. McKinney, 20, was fatally injured when the 2016 Hyundai Sonata he was driving collided head-on with a 2019 Kenworth tractor-trailer driven by Anthony P. Robinson, 43, of Elba. “A Safety Rule, A Fatal Flaw”; Industry Discussed Underride Rules in 2000

This week, I discovered a U.S. News & World Report article, published on October 2, 2000, entitled, “A Safety Rule, A Fatal Flaw.” I find it enlightening that the trailer manufacturers conceded twenty-two years ago, “underride guards can save lives.” They further admitted that if they had some guidance on technical specifications from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), then they could add side guards to trailers. But the manufacturers were unwilling to spend money doing so unless they were required to install them.

How many lives could have been saved if the U.S. Department of Transportation had acted decisively at that time and initiated side guard rulemaking? Perhaps more to the point, I’d like to know if Secretary Buttigieg will act boldly now to end these senseless, preventable deaths by determining that a side guard regulation is warranted?

A 2007 Toyota Yaris was traveling north on Route 17 when it crossed a double solid yellow centerline and collided head-on with a southbound 2004 Kenworth tractor-trailer, according to a release Friday from Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Brent Coffey.

In Memory of Shinreca Brown & James Williams (June 2, 2022)

McDonald stopped in the center turn lane, waiting for the northbound travel lanes to clear so he could proceed northbound but after entering into the center lane, the suspect’s trailer did not totally clear the left southbound travel lane.

According to documents, the victims, James Williams and Shinreca Brown, were in a 2003 Mercury Marquis, traveling southbound on Swinnea Road when they struck the part of the semi-trailer that was stopped in the travel lane.
