In Memory of Michael Black (June 26, 2023)

According to officials, the investigation indicates that the victim was driving along Welcome Road when he crossed the center line and hit the tractor-trailer head-on. The Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 22-year-old Michael Black from Williamston. One dead following crash involving tractor-trailer in Anderson County

Because the bottom of a truck is higher than the bumper of passenger vehicles, when there is a collision the smaller vehicle easily slides under the truck and the first point of impact is the windshield. Seatbelts, airbags, and car crumple zones do not function as intended in underride crashes —frontside, and rear — leaving passenger vehicle occupants vulnerable to life-threatening injuries.

Still Time to Submit a Public Comment on Side Guard Rule (July 20)

Don’t miss the July 20 deadline (extended from June 20) for submitting a Public Comment to NHTSA on the Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for Side Underride Guards. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Go to this link.
  • Write your comment to let NHTSA know why you want them to proceed with a rule on side guards.
  • If you have specific information to answer NHTSA’s nine questions, you can include it in your comments and/or add attachments.
  • Please note the WARNING:   Do not submit personally identifiable information through this form. Any personally identifiable information (e.g., name, address, phone number) included in the comment form or in an attachment may be publicly disclosed in a docket or on the Internet.
  • Use the drop down box to Select a Comment Category (Rule/Proposed Rule/Final Rule).
  • Provide your email address (won’t be published online) and indicate that you’re an Individual and NOT a Robot.
  • Then, SUBMIT.

Public Comments on the Side Guard ANPRM – As of June 16, 2023 (119)

The majority of comments (over 1,000) posted from June 16 through June 23 were from individuals and organizations which support the requests in the Public Comment from the League of American Bicyclists – calling for pedestrians and bicyclists to be included in the data for side guard regulatory analysis.

STOP Senseless Roadway Deaths: Give Victims a Voice

Inaction by federal traffic safety agencies, who are fiercely and disproportionately influenced by industry pressure, has left all road users at risk. As a follow-up to the PBS/Frontline truck underride documentary, on June 22, ProPublica published an article which has exposed the depth of this regulatory capture and the powerlessness of safety activists to bring about change.

If I hadn’t already been aware of most of the details of this report, I might have had a hard time believing it was for real. I’m curious what you think of it. It’s a long read, but worth it!

  • “The Department of Transportation allowed trucking lobbyists to review an unpublished report recommending a safety device that could save lives by preventing pedestrians and cyclists from getting crushed under large trucks. . .
  • But that recommendation generated intense resistance, both internally, from department officials who challenged their findings, and externally, from trucking industry lobbyists. . .
  • After meeting with trucking industry lobbyists in December, 2018, the DOT supervisor overseeing the project emailed researchers: “PLEASE delete any mention of a recommendation to develop…any regulation.” DOT Researchers Suggested a Way to Make Big Trucks Safer. After Meeting With Lobbyists, Agency Officials Rejected the Idea.

In Memory of Paul Yerkes (June 23, 2023)

Officials say, Paul Yerkes, 64, died on the scene after his car hit a Semi on Hwy 3 and Newell Avenue East of Allison, Iowa.

Police say Yerkes was driving westbound on Hwy 3 when he entered the eastbound lane and hit a Semi. One person dead after car vs semi crash in Butler County

In Memory of Denver Lee Reagan (June 21, 2023)

A Blue Mound, Kansas, man was killed on Wednesday after a head-on collision ended with his car catching on fire.

The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) Crash Log says Denver Lee Reagan Jr., 45, was driving a Ford pickup south on Kansas Highway 7, roughly six miles south of Mound City, when he crossed the center line and hit a Kenworth head-on. In Memory of Ciara Corbitt (June 21, 2023)

According to the Energy Police Department, at around 8:06 a.m., a 2010 Ford Explorer driven by 30-year-old Ciara Corbitt, of Herrin, was going southbound on Route 148 in Energy, near the 300 block of N. Pershing Street.

They say the SUV crossed the center turn lane and hit the trailer of a northbound semi tractor trailer driven by Zachary Ramage of Anna, Ill. 1 dead after crash involving SUV, semi truck in Energy, Ill.

In Memory of Peter DeToffoli (November 4, 2022)

While officers were cleaning up the tractor-trailer crash, 58-year-old Peter DeToffoli sped through traffic striking the back of the truck, police said.

In Memory of Ginger McBride (June 16, 2023)

Ginger McBride, 52 was fatally injured when the 2016 Buick she was driving collided head-on with a tractor-trailer driven by 57-year-old Robert Bell of Chattanooga, Tenn.

In Memory of Carolynn Drum & Maria Ensinger (June 12, 2013)

According to Pennsylvania State Police, 39-year-old Carolynn Drum of New Philadelphia was driving a 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander northbound on State Route 183 near Meadowbrook Drive when she crossed into the southbound lane and struck a Freightliner tractor-trailer.

Both Drumm and a passenger, 18-year-old Maria Ensinger from New Philadelphia, were pronounced dead at the scene by the county coroner.

A third passenger, a 19-year-old male from Wapwallopen, was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. Two women killed in Schuylkill County SUV and tractor-trailer collision

In Memory of John Adams & Jamie Nelke (June 10, 2023)

Police said the Jeep crossed the travel lanes and slammed into the back of the tractor-trailer.

The driver of the Jeep, 33-year-old John Adams, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Jeep’s passenger, 36-year-old Jamie Nelke, was taken to the hospital, where she died. 2 killed after SUV slams into back of parked tractor-trailer on I-75 in Cobb County
