Global Underride Discussion

Soon after our crash on May 4, 2013, we learned about underride and began having conversations with engineers around the globe. This included emails, phone calls, and in-person meetings at our Underride Roundtables and DC Underride Crash Test Event (see DC panel discussion in above photo). On Friday, May 5, 2023, I appreciated the opportunity to continue our global underride conversation during one of our TEAM Underride Zoom discussions, which included presentations from Peter Schimmelpfennig and his dad Karl-Heinz Schimmelpfennig (Germany) and Iain Knight (UK).

In Memory of Colleen Lamberton (May 8, 2023)

Police have identified a Maple Grove woman killed in a two-vehicle crash with a garbage truck Monday afternoon in Minnetonka.

Colleen Marie Lamberton, 78, died in the crash, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner confirmed Tuesday. . .

Because the bottom of a truck is higher than the bumper of passenger vehicles, when there is a collision the smaller vehicle easily slides under the truck and the first point of impact is the windshield. Seatbelts, airbags, and car crumple zones do not function as intended in underride crashes —front, side, and rear — leaving passenger vehicle occupants vulnerable to life-threatening injuries.

In Memory of Richard Maurice (April 22, 2023)

Just before 2:30 a.m., State Police said a 2020 Toyota Camry rear-ended the tractor-trailer, then went into the median and caught fire. The tractor-trailer also went off the road and struck a guardrail.

The Camry’s driver, 30-year-old Richard Maurice, was pulled from the car before it became engulfed in flames. He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton, where he was pronounced dead. Melrose Park crash: Man killed, another hurt after car hits truck on Stone Park border, police say

Police said a car turning out of a motel parking lot struck a tractor-trailer truck at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police said the car’s driver, Tomas Osario-Gomez, 37, of Providence, was pronounced dead at the scene. Driver killed in crash in Johnston

New York State Police have released the names of the two people killed Sunday when a vehicle struck a disabled tractor-trailer on I-86 in Big Flats.

Two passengers in the westbound vehicle, Larissa Abassoba, 72, of Brooklyn, and Kamale Aliyeva, 58, who was visiting the United States from overseas, were pronounced dead at the scene. UPDATE: State Police release names of women killed in Big Flats crash

In Memory of Eric Skilling (April 25, 2023)

At 5:50 a.m., Eric Kenneth Skilling, 43, of Abilene, was driving north on K15 in a Ford F150 and crossed the center line at a bend in the road, according to Kansas Highway Patrol crash logs.

Skilling hit a Peterbilt semi-truck head-on in the southbound lane. The semi-truck driver was taken to Abilene Memorial Health System hospital with no apparent injuries, according to the KHP crash log. Deadly Semi truck crash south of Abilene

A 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Michael Scheuerman, 49, Ellinwood, was traveling westbound on U.S. 56, when it swerved left of center into the eastbound lane and collided with the 2016 Kenworth tractor-trailer driven by Austin McAlonan, 29, Hays. Ellinwood man dies in semi crash Tuesday

In Memory of Brenna Rachelle Denison (April 20, 2023)

Brenna Rachelle Denison, originally of Huntingdon and most recently of Chambersburg, was driving a 2013 Buick Verano north in the 1600 block of Letterkenny Road in Hamilton Township when she crossed the double-yellow line into oncoming traffic and collided with a 2016 Peterbilt tractor-trailer driven by 75-year-old Ronald E. In Memory of James Williams (May 6, 2023)

Officers responded to calls regarding the incident around 2:45 a.m. Saturday near 6600 Statesville Road in north Charlotte. James Williams, 30, was found suffering from injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene.

An initial investigation revealed Williams’ Lexus went underneath a tractor-trailer that was hauling two trailers as the truck was turning. Driver who went underneath semi dies; speed, impairment suspected: CMPD
