Media Coverage of DC Underride Victim Vigil & Press Conference

Families of underride victims gathered on September 14, 2023, in front of the U.S. Department of Transportation at 1200 New Jersey Ave SE in Washington, DC — with crash test cars from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety 2017 side underride research in the background — to remember loved ones, who lost their lives due to truck underride. The families rang a commemorative bell for over 750 victims, primarily from the last few years, and called upon the Department to re-evaluate publicly available data, end their decades of inaction, and issue strong underride regulations.

Their message was this: Delay = Death.

A Record of Those Remembered in the Underride Victim Vigil

Media coverage included:

Grieving families say US Department of Transportation failed victims of tractor-trailer underride crashes

Speakers at the press conference included:

  • Dr. Elisa Braver, epidemiologist and safety researcher
  • Andy Young, The Law Firm for Truck Safety
  • Barry Davis, father of underride victim Ally Davis
  • Lois Durso, mother of underride victim Roya Sadigh
  • Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL)
  • Sean O’Malley, Insurance Institute for Highway Safety
  • Abbie Bingham Endicott, cousin of underride victim Sylvia Bingham
  • Daniel Langenkamp (husband of underride victim Sarah Langenkamp) read a statement from Stephen Bingham, father of underride victim Sylvia Bingham
  • Nancy Avis, cousin of underride victim Carling Mott
  • Harry Adler, Institute for Safer Trucking
  • Jerry and Marianne Karth, parents of underride victims AnnaLeah & Mary Karth

“Underride crashes, which occur when a car slides underneath the body of a truck, have tragically become all too common on our highways. These crashes are preventable. Underride guards on large trucks save lives. I urge @NHTSAgov to implement stronger protections without delay,” said Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky. “I would be remiss if I did not mention all the survivors and family members who are turning their personal tragedy into advocacy. We could not do this without you.”

In Memory of Martin Warner Jr. (September 12, 2023)

At 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday, police said they responded to a two-vehicle crash near exit 174 on I-495 in Fairfax County in which a tractor-trailer suddenly slowed in speed due to mechanical issues and a 2003 Mercedes-Benz struck its rear.

In Memory of Nathan, Savannah, & Karaline Johnson (June 29, 2023)

Savannah Johnson, 15, and Karaline Johnson, 13, were identified as two of the three people killed in the crash on Interstate 70 in Cambridge Township Thursday morning, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

News Center 7 previously reported that their father, Nathan Johnson, 45, also of Fairborn, was also in the car at the time of the crash. He was taken to Ohio Health Hospital of Cambridge where he died.

A preliminary investigation showed that Raymond Clifford, of Orange City, Florida, was driving a 2018 Freightliner commercial vehicle west on I-70 when it went off the left side of the roadway, crossed the median, and then struck a guardrail and the Nissan Versa carrying the three members of the Johnson family that was headed east on I-70. In Memory of Alice Eve Cornell (September 1, 2023)

Friday afternoon, troopers said Wesley Merrick, 55, and Alicia Eve Cornell, 46, both of Wellsville, N.Y., were the people who died at the scene of the crash.

Merrick was driving the SUV involved in the crash. Cornell was a passenger.

A crew flew Merrick’s 49-year-old wife, who was the front seat passenger in the SUV, to R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. Medics took another SUV passenger, a 59-year-old man, to Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown. . .

Troopers said Merrick’s SUV hit the rear of a tractor trailer that started to brake because of traffic. That began a chain reaction that caused three other tractor trailers and a pickup truck to collide with each other. 2 from New York dead after tractor trailers, SUV, truck crash on I-81 in Washington County
