A tractor-trailer was traveling on I-91 northbound, just south of the Exit 29a off-ramp in the right center lane of five. A Nissan Rogue was traveling in the same lane, directly in front of the truck.

The Nissan then slowed down, causing the truck to rear-end the car. . .

The Nissan driver was taken to an area hospital for minor injuries, state police said. The right-back passenger in the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene. Because the bottom of a truck is higher than the bumper of passenger vehicles, when there is a collision the smaller vehicle easily slides under the truck and the first point of impact is the windshield. Seatbelts, airbags, and car crumple zones do not function as intended in underride crashes —front, side, and rear — leaving passenger vehicle occupants vulnerable to life-threatening injuries.

A witness told Local 10 News the truck was attempting to back in when the vehicle slammed into the trailer portion. Another witness told a similar story, saying she was walking with her children when she saw the car barrel into the back of the trailer.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol update information the driver of the passenger car, Kevin Ford, 36, of Carl Junction, Mo. died Saturday morning following the Friday morning crash. . .

Maria Pardo, 56, of Miami Gardens, Florida, was eastbound on Baseline Blvd, operating a 2014 Volvo tractor-trailer. She pulled across the path of a car on Mo-43.
