Mark Roderick of Rosewood was headed east just after 6:30 a.m. on state Route 29 West when he struck a semitrailer as it was backing into a driveway, according to the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash happened in the 6600 block of state Route 29 West when Brian Houpt, 42, of St. Paris was backing the 2006 Volvo tractor-trailer.
Roderick, who was driving a 1999 Honda Civic, was taken to Mercy Health-Urbana Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the sheriff’s office. Champaign County man dies in crash with tractor-trailer
Because the bottom of a truck is higher than the bumper of passenger vehicles, when there is a collision the smaller vehicle easily slides under the truck and the first point of impact is the windshield. Seatbelts, airbags, and car crumple zones do not function as intended in underride crashes —front, side, and rear — leaving passenger vehicle occupants vulnerable to life-threatening injuries.
