A dad and his teenage daughter have died and a 9-year-old is in the intensive care unit following a crash with a box truck, authorities announced Thursday, May 4, 2023.
The driver was alone in the box truck and 40-year-old Joshua “JJ” Moore was with his 15-year-old daughter Aviona “Avi,” and his son were in his car, when the vehicles collided at the intersection of South Front Street/PA Route 230 and T Street in Steelton at approximately 3:54 p.m., according to the police. Because the bottom of a truck is higher than the bumper of passenger vehicles, when there is a collision the smaller vehicle easily slides under the truck and the first point of impact is the windshield. Seatbelts, airbags, and car crumple zones do not function as intended in underride crashes —front, side, and rear — leaving passenger vehicle occupants vulnerable to life-threatening injuries.
