In Memory of Allison Dephillipo (July 20, 2022)

Allison Dephillipo, 27, of Gibbstown, was driving a car southbound in West Deptford Township around 6:30 p.m. when her vehicle struck the rear of the truck, according to a New Jersey State Police spokesperson. Driver killed in collision with tractor-trailer on I-295

Because the bottom of a truck is higher than the bumper of passenger vehicles, when there is a collision the smaller vehicle easily slides under the truck and the first point of impact is the windshield. Seatbelts, airbags, and car crumple zones do not function as intended in underride crashes —frontside, and rear — leaving passenger vehicle occupants vulnerable to life-threatening injuries.

Update on Underride Protection Progress

In July 2022, eight years after our original petition was delivered to the Department of Transportation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), whose mission it is to save lives, prevent injuries, and reduce economic costs due to road traffic crashes, through education, research, safety standards, and enforcement, took the following actions related to underride protection:

By refusing to revise the December 2015 NPRM to the TOUGHGuard proven level of strength, NHTSA has demonstrated an unwillingness to require that all manufacturers install these stronger guards as Standard on new trailers. To state the obvious, the result is that manufacturers may continue to offer these guards as an Option, thereby allowing the ongoing production of trailers — into the future — with guards having a known unreasonable risk of Death By Underride. How do they sleep at night knowing that their meaningless rhetoric and regulatory malpractice means many more innocent people will needlessly die?

This is nothing less than a reckless disregard for human life.

Why are we working so hard to get weak rear underride guards replaced?

In Memory of Heather Cole (July 15, 2022)

OSHP said Heather Cole, 27, of Xenia, was driving a compact car on Ohio 380 in Chester Township when it went left of center and was struck by a semi truck driven by Jeffrey Thompson, 51, of Urbana. . .

Cole was pronounced dead at the scene. EMS transported Thompson to Kettering Health Greene Memorial hospital where he was treated for nonserious injuries. Xenia woman, 27, dies in Clinton County crash involving semi truck

In Memory of Ronald Spangler (July 15, 2022)

Ronald Spangler, 54, of Kulpmont struck the rear of the slowing tractor trailer in his Dodge Caravan.

Spangler had become entrapped under the rear bumper of the tractor trailer and sustained fatal injuries.  He was pronounced dead at the scene by a member of the Schuylkill County Coroner’s office. Victim Identified in Fatal Interstate 81 Crash in Schuylkill County

Launching a Campaign To Flood NHTSA With Underride Complaint Reports

Safety defect investigations are based upon complaints. That’s why we’re calling on people to help us submit UNDERRIDE Safety Problem Reports to NHTSA.

In response to our Petition for Investigation of Trailers Without Side Guards submitted to the US DOT on September 14, 2021, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in Washington, DC, indicated that they had only received three complaints — besides our petition — about the safety hazard posed by tractor-trailers without side guards. They subsequently denied our petition on June 22, 2022.

Of course, we know that there have been many more than three side underride deaths and serious injuries. However, we are making plans to make sure that the ODI knows this as well and are launching a campaign for submission of underride complaints of all kinds to NHTSA — side, rear, front, tractor-trailer, Single Unit Trucks, and those involving not only passenger vehicle occupants but also pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.

We are asking that people send us crash reports for collisions with trucks which they suspect involved underride. Send them to marianne@annaleahmary.com. We will submit these as complaints to ODI.

In Memory of Mark and Karen Cummings (July 15, 2022)

A Xenia husband and wife died after a car crashed into the back of a semi-truck Friday morning on U.S. 35 in Greene County. . .

Mark Cummings, 64, of Xenia, was driving a 2021 Chevrolet Malibu east on U.S. 35 when the car crashed into the back of a semi-truck stopped in the right lane of the highway, according to a press release. Cummings and his passenger, 65-year-old Karen Cummings, both were pronounced dead at the scene. Xenia couple dies after car hits stopped semi on US 35 in Greene County

In Memory of Karl and Mary Lou Seelandt (July 6, 2022)

Karl and Mary Lou Seelandt died July 6 in the crash, according to a GoFundMe post. The married couple had been on a cross-country road trip from Lompoc, California and had just visited their granddaughter for her 1-year-old birthday, according to the post. . .

The Florida Highway Patrol stated the Tesla has been driving southbound on Interstate 75 near Gainesville with a 66-year-old woman in the driver’s seat and 67-year-old man as passenger, according to the FHP crash report. The report said that for unknown reasons, the 2015 Tesla traveled into the parking lot of the Paynes Prairie Rest Area just before 2 p.m. and struck the rear of a parked 2020 Freightliner tractor-trailer hauling Walmart goods. The victim is 49-year-old Amy Freytiz, of Shillington, Berks County. . .

Police said Freytiz’s vehicle caught fire after hitting the back of a tractor-trailer that had stopped on the berm. Woman dies in crash in Ephrata Township

In Memory of Brandon Drake Richards (June 25, 2022)

A 2003 Nissan Altima driven by Brandon Drake Richards, a 28-year-old from Pascagoula, traveled across the eastbound lanes of Highway 90 when it collided with a semi-truck traveling east. Richard received fatal injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead. Fatal crash on Hwy 90 in Jackson County leaves one dead

In Memory of Brenda Ladner Carlisle Guinn (June 20, 2022)

49-year-old Brenda Carlisle-Guinn was killed in a collision with a tractor-trailer on Moselle-Seminary Road in Jones County.

According to reports the incident happened around 6:00 a.m. along Moselle-Seminary Road at Stewart Drive. Preliminary investigation suggests that Carlisle-Guinn was driving a Nissan Altima east toward I-59 when she collided under unknown circumstances with a westbound tractor-trailer in a sharp curve near Southern Hens.
