The investigation revealed that a 2006 Subaru Legacy, operated by 40-year-old Tramayne Holmes of Milton, New York, was traveling eastbound on State Route 28 when he lost control of his vehicle and crossed over into the westbound lane and struck a 2022 Peterbilt tractor-trailer head-on, according to New York State Police from Ulster County. Because the bottom of a truck is higher than the bumper of passenger vehicles, when there is a collision the smaller vehicle easily slides under the truck and the first point of impact is the windshield. Seatbelts, airbags, and car crumple zones do not function as intended in underride crashes —front, side, and rear — leaving passenger vehicle occupants vulnerable to life-threatening injuries.
