In Memory of Rodney Hutt (December 27, 2021)

Rodney Earl Hutt, 61, died when the 2013 Toyota Avalon he was driving collided with the rear of a semi tractor trailer driven by Abraham Weldemikael, 24, of Hyattsville, MD. Hutt’s vehicle became lodged underneath the trailer. SD man dies in Hamilton County crash; Hutt’s vehicle was lodged underneath semi tractor trailer

Because the bottom of a truck is higher than the bumper of passenger vehicles, when there is a collision the smaller vehicle easily slides under the truck and the first point of impact is the windshield. In Memory of Bryant Gladney (December 22, 2021)

Authorities said Boone County Fire Protection District Assistant Fire Chief Bryant Gladney was killed in action early Wednesday. . .

While Gladney and the other crews were working the crash scene, a truck struck Gladney’s vehicle at a high rate of speed, then struck the ambulance and the original commercial truck involved, according to Fire Chief Scott Olsen.

In Memory of James Millikan (December 23, 2021)

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said 63-year old James Millikan died when his 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck collided with a tractor-trailer. Millikan’s passenger, a 60-year old Atmore woman, was transported to an area hospital for treatment of her injuries. Atmore man killed in Escambia County, Alabama crash

In Memory of Socorro Mercado (December 24, 2021)

. . . a 2005 Chevrolet Suburban, was southbound and crashed into the rear of the semi-trailer.

The driver of the suburban, Socorro Mercado, a 46-year-old woman from Minnesota, died in the crash. She was wearing her seat belt at the time of the accident. 1 dead after crash with semi-truck on Kansas highway

In Memory of Cameron Gray (December 17, 2021)

At a slight curve in the road, police said the eastbound Toyota Corolla crossed into the westbound lane, directly into the path of the cement truck. The truck driver was not able to stop in time and the Toyota hit the truck head-on.

A short time after the crash, the car and truck were both engulfed in flames.

The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. Police identified him on Saturday as Cameron Gray of Federalsburg, Maryland.

According to their investigation, Clarissa Simmons, 20, of Richmond was driving a Buick Encore west on the interstate when she abruptly moved from the right lane to the left lane. Police say she corrected, ending up in the right shoulder where she crashed into a disabled tractor-trailer. Richmond woman dies after crashing into disabled tractor-trailer

Why are we working so hard to get weak rear underride guards replaced?

Not only have we lost two daughters due to a weak rear underride guard, but we continue to see countless loved ones lost to other families in a similar way. Senseless deaths. Solutions are available — developed by innovative engineers but too often left on the shelf while people continue to die.

I get Google Alert notifications of truck crashes every day. Here are the rear underride fatalities which I have found in the last few months:

Let’s work together to get damaged rear underride guards off the road!

Anyone, who observes a rear underride guard in an obvious state of disrepair, can report it to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) via their online National Consumer Complaint Database. Make note of the name of the trucking company. If possible, memorize its DOT# and get a photo of the guard. Then follow these step-by-step instructions for reporting this truck safety hazard as soon as possible:

Here are some examples of rear underride guards in disrepair — a condition which weakens their ability to stop a car from riding under the truck in the event of a collision:

Millions of trucks on the road have rear underride guards which are already too weak to prevent deadly underride. When they are not properly maintained, their strength is reduced even further.

As of December 9, 2021, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is requiring that trucking companies monitor the condition of the rear underride guards on the back of their trailers. Truck drivers should look over this safety equipment when they do a pre-trip inspection. If this Rear Impact Guard has not been properly maintained, the trucking company and the truck driver could receive violations with fines attached at the time of annual vehicle inspection due to a Final Rule published by the FMCSA.

If a truck fails the inspection, the violation could cost a motor carrier a maximum of $15,876 and a truck driver $3,969. This could lead to the replacement of many rear underride guards — hopefully, with guards that meet the TOUGHGuard level of strength proven possible by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and now on many new trailers.

Motorists who notice guards in questionable condition can help to make sure that this important regulation gets enforced by using this tool to report them to the U.S. Department of Transportation:

Let’s hope that trucking companies and truck drivers will take responsibility themselves to properly maintain this safety equipment and even go so far as to replace outdated equipment with the stronger retrofit kits which are available thanks to innovative engineers — at a cost less than that of fines!

Two tractor trailers, a Dodge Journey and a Toyota Camry were slowing down because of a previous collision when all four vehicles collided, according to Master Trooper Brian Lee with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The driver of the Dodge and the driver of the Toyota both died as a result of the crash. One victim has been identified as William Kelley Gomillion, 51, of Sellers. The other victim remains unidentified at this time. 2 dead in 4-vehicle crash on I-95 near Florence

Authorities said 46-year-old Sandy Prevost, of Loranger, was driving her Chevy Tahoe behind a Honda that struck the Peterbilt. After glancing off the Honda, the dump truck veered into the southbound lane and collided with the front of the Chevrolet, police said.
