In Memory of Carl Schwing (September 29, 2020)

A spokesperson for Colorado State Patrol says a medical episode is likely to blame for the crash, which happened around 8 a.m. on Tuesday.

State Patrol says a 2020 Subaru Forester headed eastbound on Highway 24 began drifting in the westbound lanes into the path of the semi. The truck driver tried to move out of the way but couldn’t in time, and the Forester crashed into the trailer. 1 killed in semi-versus-SUV crash between Woodland Park and Divide

Carl Schwing, formerly a Bonita Springs city manager and a Cape Coral assistant city manager, died Tuesday at the scene of a car crash in Colorado.

Bonita Springs city officials confirmed Schwing’s SUV was involved in a fatal crash near Colorado Springs.

Schwing’s SUV drifted into the path of a semi-truck and crashed into its trailer, likely due to a medical episode, according to a news release from Colorado State Patrol.  Former Bonita Springs city manager dead after his SUV crashes in Colorado

Because the bottom of a truck is higher than the bumper of passenger vehicles, when there is a collision the smaller vehicle easily slides under the truck and the first point of impact is the windshield. Seatbelts, airbags, and car crumple zones do not function as intended in underride crashes — leaving passenger vehicle occupants vulnerable to life-threatening injuries.

How You Can Help

Note: In order to raise awareness and preserve the memories of underride victims — precious ones gone too soon — I have been writing memorial posts on what appear to me to be underride crashes. I am not a crash reconstructionist, and I do not have all the facts on these crashes; but underride should be investigated as a potential factor in truck crash injuries and deaths.
