. . . the tractor trailer was heading eastbound in Becket on Friday afternoon when traffic in front of the truck began to slow down. The truck then struck the rear of a Toyota Camry, and pushed that car into a Toyota Sienna van.
Both occupants of the Camry were transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. The driver, identified as Gary Litwin, 69, of Ludlow, was pronounced dead at the hospital. Because the bottom of a truck is higher than the bumper of passenger vehicles, when there is a collision the smaller vehicle easily slides under the truck and the first point of impact is the windshield. Seatbelts, airbags, and car crumple zones do not function as intended in underride crashes —front, side, and rear — leaving passenger vehicle occupants vulnerable to life-threatening injuries.
